Like most people of color, the miniseries Roots that aired in 1977 got me to think and wonder about my ancestors. I began my "In Search of You" journey in 1980 after observing three elderly people sitting together at a family reunion. I realized that I didn’t know how we were related or the many others attending family reunions each year.
This reunion was at the home of Sadie Cherry in Clinton. We were all sitting outside in her yard under a large shade tree. I knew them, but never really talked to them. The three were Edgar, William and Dale McLamb...children of Susan McLamb. I asked them their age. Dale was the oldest, and then William and Edgar was the youngest. It was from that day in 1980, I decided to learn more about my ancestry line.
Slowly, I started trying to incorporate family history in our family reunions. I designed and distributed buttons in 1983 as shown below.
In looking back, I wished I had pay more attention to the elderly. I remember one time Edgar talked about the family history but I could not hear it from where I was standing. He did have a soft voice.
Each year thereafter more and more family history is added as well as picture taking. I have been labeled the McLamb Family Historian. In 2019, I published my first full family history book entitled The Genealogy of the McLamb Family of African Descent, Sampson County, North Carolina. This was Volume 1. I am compiling Volume 2, but it will be after I complete the King/McPhail Family History Book.
Family history research is a lot of detective work. It was my Cousin Edgar and my Great Aunt Rosie that started me on my family history journey. And, as I found more and more bits and pieces of family history in my journey, I realized that I was, after all,
In Search of You.
